Your instructor will ensure you have an enjoyable weekend and will introduce you to the basics of sailing. By the end of the course you will be able to steer a course and handle rope work and sails. Hopefully this will be the starting point in many years of sailing.
During the course your instructor will teach you all the basics of sailing a cruising yacht. This will include sail handling, helming, trimming sails, knots and rope work, mooring, a
nchoring, rules of the road and much more. By the end of the course you will have covered around 100 nautical miles and 4 night sailing hours. You will have gained the confidence and knowledge to make you a useful crew member on any yacht. No previous experience is required.
The RYA Competent Crew course is 5 days. This can be completed as a 5 day course, or a combination of a 2 day module and a 3 day module.
The RYA Day Skipper course covers all aspects of skippering a modern cruising yacht, including boat handling, navigation, pilotage and seamanship skills. You will skipper a short passage during your course under the watchful eye of your instructor and gain the experience and confidence to allow you to skipper a cruising yacht in familiar waters by day. It is recommended that you will have already logged over 100NM and have an understanding of basic navigation.
The RYA Day Skipper course is 5 days. This can be completed as a 5 day course, or a combination of a 2 day module and a 3 day module.
This course is an ideal stepping stone between day skipper and the full RYA/MCA examination
course. It is aimed at the more experienced day skippers and will provide the student with the knowledge to be able to complete more demanding coastal passages by day and night. The course will cover more complex boat handling, pilotage and passage planning. It is recommended that you will have already completed 300 miles, 8 night hours with over 15 days on board and 2 days as Skipper. You will require navigation skills at the level of Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory.
After successful completing the course you will be awarded a RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate which will enable you to skipper longer coastal passages safely and confidently.
This course covers the RAY Day Skipper theory and practical courses. You will spend the first 2 days afloat brushing up old skills. Followed by 2 days in the
classroom where you will learn Chartwork and navigation. The remainder of the time is spent afloat where you will cover all aspects of the practical sylabus and the remaining parts of the theory.
This is an ideal way to become a proficient Skipper in the minimun time. The course starts on Saturday mornings and finishes on Sunday afternoon. During the course you will be accomodated on board. The cost includes all learning material, foul weather gear if required and all food eaten on board.
This is aimed at more experienced skippers and is a natural progression from the Coastal Skipper Course. During the first couple of days your instructor will asses your existing skills and give you an honest appraisal of your likely performance during the exam. Over the following days your instruction will be tailored to cover any areas of weakness that have been highlighted. You will take charge of the yacht in various situations and become familiar with close quarter manoeuvres both under sail and power. You will practice dealing with emergency situations, navigating in restricted visibility, pilotage plans and skippering techniques.
After 5 days your instructor will give you a thorough debrief and you should feel confident in your ability to take the exam should you feel ready to do so.
To attain the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate of competence candidates must pass a practical examination of the skippering ability. A Yachtmaster is capable of skippering a yacht on longer offshore passages, they are more experienced than Coastal Skippers and can carry out the same things more smoothly and can perform at a high level in arduous conditions.
The 5 days prior to the exam is run along the same lines as the Coastal Skipper preparation. Your instructor will asses your skills and address any areas over weakness. A high level of boat handling under various conditions of wind and tide is required. Navigation skills should be at the level of Yachtmaster/Coastal Skipper theory and a thorough knowledge of collision regulations is expected. Your instructor will tailor the course to suit your individual needs in order to prepare you for when the examiner steps on board.
During the exam you will be asked to skipper the yacht during a passage and carry out various demonstrations of your skippering and sailing ability.
